New California Expungement Law
More than 11 million arrest and conviction records have been wiped clean in the first six months of the implementation of a new California law, marking the largest expungement over that time period in the country’s history.
Lawmakers passed Senate Bill 731 which expands options for sealing criminal records beyong cannabis-related offenses but excludes sex offenses. The bill offers individuals with a wider range of criminal convictions the opportunity to seal their records. The eligibility criteria requires that a person can apply for record sealing within four years of completing their sentence, provided they have not been arrested again during that period.
